:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
:::::::::::::::::::::::: BOOTX HISTORY ::::::::::::::::::::::::::
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
::: Version 4.45 ::: April 2, 1992 ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
- Minor improvement in the Repair Disk routine.
::: Version 4.44 ::: March 25, 1992 :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
- Mega apoligies, apparently when BootX was unable to find the
BootX.BBLib, BootX.Recog, BootX.Brain or BootX.Prefs file the
Guru would visit.
Sorry this bug slipped through, it's all a matter of debugging
conditions. I try to keep BootX as up to date as possible,
sometimes neglecting quality.
::: Version 4.43 ::: March 24, 1992 :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
- Fixed a small bug in the Add Comment routine. Somehow the virus
name did not get included in the comment...
- BootX now shows a message when Help Mode is on.
- The BrainFile is now sorted. All new entries will be added in
their correct alphabetic place.
- Bug fix: when BootX failed to load the Alarm sample and a virus
would be found, the audio.device would go into an endless loop.
::: Version 4.42 ::: March 10, 1992 :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
- Some minor bug fixes.
::: Version 4.41 ::: March 2, 1992 ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
- Completely rewrote the BrainFile system. Old brainfiles are not
compatible anymore (sorry about that...). But now you can send
me your brainfiles if there are any bootblocks in it that BootX
does not yet recognize.
NOTE: The new BrainFile system has not yet been fully implemented
as I want it to be but this version is stable and functional.
- From now on BootX requires the ReqTools library no matter if
you are using KickStart 1.3 or 2.0.
- Added some more file-types for BootX to recognize.
- Added some more error reporting routines.
- Added an installation script using Commodore's Installer.
::: Version 4.40 ::: February 3, 1992 :::::::::::::::::::::::::::
- Bug fix: numerous users reported that the Check Disk feature
did not work. Well, it didn't anymore and now it does again.
- Bug fix: when BootX recalculated the checksum of a bootblock
and it was incorrect, the replacement with the correct value
was not succesfull anymore.
- Bug fix: closing the small window after a Go to Sleep was a
sure way to crash your Amiga. Thanks go to Peter Sand
(Sweden) for reporting this.
- Bug fix: in previous versions BootX sometimes corrupted the
memory list when scanning hard-disks with many files (> 3000
files). This should be fixed now. Please write to me if you
still experience this problem. Besure you can reproduce the
error and specify the exact conditions under which it occured.
- Bug fix: automatic diskchange should now work properly with
KickStart 2.0.
- Added some more error reporting routines.
- Reduced stack space consumption of the Check Files routines.
- New feature: BootX tries to load a FORM 8SVX sample called
BootX.alarm during the program start. This sample will be
played every time a virus (boot, file or link) is found. Note
that no double-buffering is used so the sample can only be 128K
of length (but I don't see how this will be a problem...).
- New feature: When BootX finds a virus during the file check it
will move the BootX screen to the front and either beep the
display or play the BootX.alarm sample. This is handy when
checking large hard-disks with the BootX screen somewhere in the
back while you do something else.
- New feature: BootX can check files crunched with the TNM
Cruncher.
- Rewrote the doc file and added an index.
- New recognized file types:
LhA SFX file
PowerVisor Structure Definition file
PowerVisor Macro file
- New BootX.Recog v1.20
- Build in LVD 1.71.
::: Version 4.30 ::: January 6, 1992 ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
- Starting with this version, BootX will load its virus recognition
patterns from a file called BootX.Recog. This way it is easier
to update BootX. I just have to change the Recog file and spread
it instead of release a complete new version of BootX.
Always try to get the latest version of the recog file to get
maximum protection. You can find out the version of a recog file
in several ways:
1. After BootX has succesfully loaded a recog file it will display
the version and the release date of the file.
2. Select the About menu item. The text will show the version and
the release date of the recog file and how many bootblocks,
bootviruses and fileviruses it knows.
NOTE: these numbers may vary from the number reported by the
"Show known xxx" menu items. The numbers reported here
are the number of recog blocks that BootX can use to
identify a virus. The "Show known xxx" menu items only
report all the different names that BootX uses, f.e.
BootX recognizes 8 different versions of the Lamer
Exterminator bootvirus but the name will only show up
once in the the "Show known bootviruses" list.
3. Use the Workbench 2.x version command:
1> version BootX.Recog
- The series of requesters for the Check Disk operation have been
removed. Instead a simple settings requesters allows you to determine
what checks to perform during a disk-check.
- BootX now recognizes in which drive you insert a new disk (something
it should have been able to do a long time ago, sigh...) and makes
that drive the current one automagically.
- The option Check All Files in the Check Files requesters has been
removed because it was obsolete and has been replaced by something a
lot of users have been asking about: Check crunched files
When this option is enabled, BootX tries to decrunch all crunched
executables in memory and then checks the file for viruses. Note that
this will slow down a file check considerabely.
Recognized crunchers:
PowerPacker 3.0
PowerPacker 4.0
- New recognized bootviruses:
ABC
Nasty Nasty
PowerTeam
Ripper 2
WAFT
Thanks go to Ralf Bechlarz (Germany) for sending the PowerTeam virus

::: Version 4.13 ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
- Due to the new file check routine introduced in version 4.00
BootX would do some pretty nasty things when checking data
files. Don't worry, no damage would be done to the files on
disk but BootX would start writing in memory not allocated by
it. This should be fixed now. My hard-disk contains about
2760+ files and I have put BootX v4.13 to work on it using all
the combinations of the options BootX offers (with success).
Be careful with all versions between v4.00 and v4.12. They
should all show the same symptoms being unexpected lock-ups and
thrashing of chip memory and screens.
- Numerous little bugs fixed thanks to a bug report from Holger
Hellebro (Sweden).
- New recognized bootblock:
CopyLock Amiga (another version, sighhh...)
Thanks go to Federico Di Vincenzo (Italy) for sending it to

- New recognised bootvirus:
Dotty bootvirus
::: Version 4.01 ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
- Built in LVD v1.60. DO NOT USE the LVD build into BootX 4.00
because it has a gigantic bug in it causing most files to be
reported as infected. Mega apologies for that !
::: Version 4.00 ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
- BootX v4.00 is a complete rewrite based on BootX v3.84. The
user interface has been completely redesigned to follow the
rules laid out in the Amiga User Interface Style Guide. I will
continue to do this in future releases of BootX.
- The screen depth was brought from 3 to 2 bitplanes resulting in
a noticable increase in text output speed.

Romijnders (The Netherlands) and Federico Di Vincenzo (Italy) for
sending them to me.
- BootX now uses a different way to determine the parameters of its

- Added embedded version string. KickStart 2.0 users can now
check the version of BootX by typing "version BootX". You will
get a message in the following format:
BootX version.revision
- When you press the left mousebutton to stop a linkvirus check a
requester will pop-up asking you to confirm you really want to
stop. Some people complained they clicked the button by
accident when the nearly had completed checking their 105 Mb
hard-disk.
- Fixed a little bug in the file recognition routine which caused
small files to be recognized wrong.
::: Version 3.80b :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Many thanks to Nico Fran
ois for the identifying codes of the
PowerPacked and other chrunched executables !
- This version of BootX contains separate code for 1.2/1.3 and
2.0 users. This means that under KickStart 2.0 BootX does NOT
need the arp.library anymore. (Are you happy now, Nico ?)
- BootX is from now on prepared for Nico Fran
ois's ReqTools
library. When you have ReqTools installed BootX will use it.
Else BootX will try to use the Asl library for KickStart 2.0
users.
- BootX now indents directories and files when walking down the
directory tree during a linkvirus check.
- You can now press the right mousebutton to halt BootX during
a linkviruscheck so that you can take a better look at the

recognized in memory after a reset.
- Bug fix: TDClose vector was checked at the wrong address.
::: Version 3.71 ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
- Bug fix: a tiny little bug slipped into the new Learn
BootBlock routine. Version 3.70 would let you add new brain
entries but they would not be used while recognizing a
bootblock.
::: Version 3.70 ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
- Gave BootX a semi-2.0 look. When running under KickStart 2.0
the screen and the windows get the 3D look.
- Build in a check for NewLoadSeg and InternalLoadSeg. These are
two new potential virus entry points in the dos.library under
KickStart 2.0.
- You can now use any mousebutton to skip through the info from
MemoryCheck. Note though that a click on the left mousebutton
is not detected when the mouse is over a gadget.
- Added checks for:
Riska virus (and Frity clone)
- Completely rewrote the MemoryCheck routine. BootX now attempts
to repair as much damage as possible, extracting the original
values from the virus code. The best policy remains to turn the
Amiga off when a virus is found.
- Fixed a bug in Learn Bootblock. This feature refused to work
under KickStart 2.0.
::: Version 3.66 ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
- Added check for Butonic 1.31 and Bret Hawnes linkviruses

lives in the L: directory and has the name and the file size
of a KickStart 1.3 disk-validator file.
::: Version 3.63 ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
- Numerous little bug fixes to make BootX more stable.
::: Version 3.62 ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
- Added the normal DOS Install bootblock to the bootblock library.

arp.library wasn't found.
- CheckFile now shows more information about the file it is
checking.
- BootX now gets its screen height and screen mode from the
Workbench screen in case it is open. In other cases the
default 200 is used.
- Fixed the bug that caused an uninitialised bootblock to
recognized as the Graffiti virus (Sorry about that).
- Replaced the MemoryCheck routine by the one found in EVW (EVW
is an Early Virus Warning program by the same author).
- The 'Show known bootblocks' menu option can now be used to show
which bootblocks and bootviruses BootX knows.
- Answering 'No' to the 'Remove current brainfile' requester now
works.
- BootX now offers to add a file comment to any linkvirus it
finds.
- IMPORTANT: some users complained that BootX didn't 'clear' any
suspicious vectors. Well, it does but only the first 5 of the
list. Should any other than the first 5 vectors be marked with
'Please check' and you don't know what is using those vectors,
turn off your Amiga, wait a few seconds and reboot. I noticed
that some harddisks or expansion boards changed the vectors of
the ExecBase.
::: Version 3.60 ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
- Expanded the memory checker
- Fixed a bug in the error exit routine (in case the arp.library
wasn't found)
- Rewrote the CheckFiles routine again to use a FIFO software
stack instead of being recursive. CheckFiles can be
interrupted again by pressing any mousebutton.
- Fixed a bug in the name printing routine of the linkviruses. I
accidentally switch the arguments for _LVOPrintf.
- Added a lot of new recog ID's for bootblockviruses.
- BootX v3.60 now recognizes 10 linkviruses:
IRQ Butonic
BSG-9 (TTV1) CCCP
Revenge of the Lamer Exterminator Jack
Xeno Centurions
Disaster Master TTV1 2
- Special thanks go to Erik L
vendahl S
rensen for giving me

address, refer to the bottom of this doc file.
::: Version 3.40 ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
- Added a check for the Peter Stuer Anti-Virus 3.0 bootblock
- Cleanup up a lot of the code
- Squashed some potential bugs
- Completely rewrote the LinkVirusCheck routine to use a client
call-back function.
- Completely rewrote the MemoryCheck routine and added a few more
vectors to check.
- Added checks for 2 more bootblocks and 7 more bootblockviruses
- Added checks for several new linkviruses.
- Rewrote the BootBlock library routines
- BootX now detects if another copy is running. This was asked
by some users who always forgot they still had a dormant copy
of BootX hanging around on the Workbench.
- For users of the SetPatch -r option BootX now asks if it is
allright to reset any memory vectors.
- More vectors are shown that are potential targets for viruses.
- Fix a bug in the View Brainfile option.
- Fix a bug in the Save Brainfile option.
- Added the Merge Brainfile option:
Since version 3.30 BootX has been able to create brainfiles.
This option allows you to 'merge' a brainfile you got from a
friend. BootX takes care of all the details. It won't add any
signatures that already exist. You select the brainfile you
wish to merge in the ARP file requester. Merging occurs in
memory, so don't forget to save the updated brainfile (BootX
will warn you though.
